Electrohome 13′ moniters

Question from Dean: Hello. First off Id just like to say I love your site, videos and podcast. I have been a fan since I got my first arcade 3 years ago a Nintendo Vs Unisystem ( original R-Type cab). Anyways I’m emailing about 2 monitors I have. Both are electrohome 13″ color monitors. One was in my Centipede cocktail (original) and the other from a generic Arkaniod cab that some one threw together ( I didn’t pay much ) there was an issue right from the beginning with the image only being in 2/3’s screen. No matter how much adjustment I do, the only way to get a good pic is to have the image to be 2/3’s of the screen. Other then that it’s completely distorted.

So the story goes I got the Centipede and it played blind. No neck glow. So I removed the monitor and chassis to have a better look. One of the soldered in fuses was blown but on closer inspection the board looked black in certain spots and many of the board components had…well, it looks like they are growing yellow/orange sprouts from them. Leakage? Is this fried? Can it be repaired? What are my options?

Second, so I removed the chassis from my Arkanoid monitor and replaced it in the Centipede monitor in hopes of verifying that the boards worked. I saw a glimmer of hope when I saw the bright wonderful colors of the game but was very distorted. Even that was  short lived since it almost seams like I lost vertical and horizontal hold. The picture won’t stop scrolling and matter how much adjustment I do I cannot get any picture besides specks of colors. I assume that this can be fixed (I hope). Would much would this cost to have fixed if I sent the chassis in? What’s the turn around time?

I hope this is enough info to get a reply. Thanks, Dean

Response from Jonathan: Dean,

Thank you for the kind words about our content. We are glad that you find it helpful.

As for your first issue, it does look like some of the components may have leaked. The good news is that the bottom (solder) side of the board matters a lot more than the top (parts) side as most of the traces that link your electronic components are on the bottom. Yes, it is repairable. If you’re going to try and do the repair yourself, I would start with a cap kit. It looks like some of your caps (specifically the 2 in the upper right hand corner) are starting to go bad. Of course, it’s also a good idea to repair any parts that are burnt up as well. You also mentioned that one of the fuses was blown. If F901 was blown, it could be and issue with your HOT or flyback. If F902 was blown, it could be some bad diodes on the board. It might be a good idea just to shotgun this and replace everything just to be on the safe side.

On your second issue, this sounds more like a sync issue than a hold issue. You might look over this post from our friend Bob Roberts that discusses some issues with G07 monitors. It could also be related to some bad transistors or an IC501 issue on the chassis.

Unfortunately we are not currently taking any monitor repairs at the moment but we do have several people we recommend. Chad at arcadecup.com is a very reputable guy and has a pretty fast turn around time. You could also contact our friend Arthur at highscoresrepair.com. He has answered several questions on our Facebook page in the past and definitely knows what he’s doing. There is a list of additional monitor repair technicians on our resources page under the Monitor Repair Services & Information heading as well. Keep in mind that most monitor repairs are going to be around the $120-$150 range.

Hope that helps. Thank you for your question and good luck with your repairs.
