Emergency Monitor Problem!

Question from Ian: Hi Jonathan-

I am taking a stab in the dark to see if I can solve a monitor/arcade problem before this weekend. I saw your comments in an online thread from a couple years ago and thought you might know a solution off hand.

I purchased an NFL Blitz game in a 1996 mortal kombat cabinet. The game fires up fine and plays great for about 10 minutes. Then it fades dark but not completely black. You can still make out the game but it is hardly playable.

The game was bought for a bachelor party this weekend (on a whim… it was only $200 and now I think I know why). I played it before I purchased… but obviously not long enough to see that there was a problem. Any advice would be stellar!

Thanks-
Ian

Response from Tim: Ian,

When a monitor just fades to black, it’s usually a failure with the power supply section of the monitor. We recommend checking the resistors on your monitor chassis. You might reflow the solder on these resistors. If that doesn’t work then you might need to replace the resistors all together.

If your monitor chassis is a Wells Gardner K7000 series (which is a very common 25″ monitor) then you might specifically check the resistors at positions R89 and R101. You might check out our post on Installing A Cap Kit if you need help identifying what monitor chassis you have.

Hope that helps, Ian. Thank you for your question and good luck with your future repairs.
