Galaga cabaret

Question from J.R.: Hey guys, I have been following you guys for a while. Thank you so much for the information you bring to people like me. I have this on a customer’s monitor that I am restoring. Do u think the problem is the board, the tube, or other? I have adjusted most all of the pots and still get this squiggly line? What do you guys think I should check next?  I’m sure u have ran into this problem before. If it is fixable, I would like to keep the original monitor and if not, switch it to an LCD. What size will go in a Galaga cabaret? Thanks, J.R.

Response from Jonathan: J.R.,

It looks like you’re experiencing some sort of sync issue with this Galaga cabaret monitor. It’s possible that the sync wire that runs from your board to your monitor is not making a good connection. It could have come out of the connector, it could have been cut or damaged over time, the pin that the wire connects to could need some solder touch up on the monitor chassis, etc. Make sure you check these areas for issues. If you do end up removing the monitor chassis from your cabinet, you might try looking for cracked or cold solder joints on it while you have it out as these can cause issues such as this.

You might also try adjusting your monitor to see if it helps your issue. Check out our post on Adjusting An Arcade Monitor for more information. Specifically, try the frequency, sync, and hold adjustments on your monitor (if it has them) to see if it makes a difference in your picture.

If the problem continues after trying the suggestions above then it’s possible that there could be a issue either with the main board or some of the parts on the monitor chassis. At this point, we would probably try hooking up another monitor to see if we could get a picture from the main board. Of course, if the picture comes up then we know we have a monitor problem. Otherwise, the issue is going to be related to the main board.

Installing an LCD in a cabaret cabinet may be tricky as the monitor currently installed in these cabinets is usually a 13 inch. You may be able to get a 15 inch LCD in it but it’s not something that we have tried to do ourselves. We would probably opt to just send the monitor chassis off for repair instead of replacing it with a LCD just due to the size. If you would like to send the chassis off for repair, we have several people we recommend. Chad at arcadecup.com is a very reputable guy and has a pretty fast turn around time. You could also contact our friend Arthur at highscoresrepair.com. He has answered several questions on our Facebook page in the past and definitely knows what he’s doing. There is a list of additional monitor repair technicians on our resources page under the Monitor Repair Services & Information heading as well.

Hope that helps. Thank you for your question and good luck with your repair.
