Galaga Question

Question from Jim: I have a Galaga arcade game and it has two issues that may be related. The first one is the ship moves all the way to the left side without touching the joystick. I checked the switches under the joystick and they’re good. I also cleaned all the chips and replaced the caps on the video and CPU boards. The other problem I’m having is when I hit one player it automatically goes to two player mode. Any advice you can give would be greatly appreciated.

Response from Jonathan: Jim,

Both of these issues sound like they could be related to a problem with your wiring. I know that I have sometimes incorrectly wired a switch for a particular joystick direction or button and had both of these type of problems occur. Keep in mind that you could also have some bad switches altogether. Check out our post on Repairing Joystick Switch Issues for more information about wiring and testing leaf switches and microswitches.

With that said, there is definitely a possibility that these issues are caused by a problem with your board. While I have not heard of any of these problems with a Galaga board in particular, I’ve definitely seen strange things like this before with other boards. Arcade Shop has a great page with some Galaga troubleshooting tips that might help you out in this case. You might also contact our friend Raymond at ArcadeComponents.com who is very familiar with Galaga boards and might be able to give you some advice on where to look to solve your issue.

Hope that helps. Thank you for your question and good luck with your repair.
