Galaga wiring questions

Question from Chris: First off, I would like to say you videos are very informative and I thank you for doing them. My question is mainly about the wiring in my cabinet. I am a novice to the arcade world but between my roomates and myself I believe we have the ability to do this, but I was hoping you could get us going in the right direction. I’ve included pictures to help illustrate what I’m talking about, but my cabinet seems to be wired rather strangley. It looks like the power cord running in has been spliced into a newer looking power supply and the original power supply. From there is where I get a little confused. I was curious why its wired into two power supplies and if that is even necessary.

In your video about first getting into the cabinet it looks like your machine (1942 I think) has a power supply, game pcb, monitor, game controls, and light wired in, but I didn’t notice a power board which mine has. Do I need this? I have two extra power boards as well, and another game pcb. I’m wanting to build a new cabinet for myself and maybe build one for my brother.

The wiring is throwing us off a little, and next in line would be the monitor. I’m really just wanting to buy a new one, and I was wondering if you could recommend some. I’ve seen some on ebay in the $200-$300 range, and I found one website that had a Betson Imperial cga 19″ for $189.

Well so far thats all I’ve got for you. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

Chris

P.S. I’ve also included my third grade attempt at make a sort of schematic. I think you’ll enjoy it 🙂

Response from Tim: More than likely when they updated to the newer style switching they kept the old monitor. Your monitor probably requires an isolation transformer and it was on your old power supply block. They just left it plugged up which is fine. The iso transformer looks a lot like a power supply so its easy to get them confused, but it just goes up to the monitor. No, you should no longer need the old linear power supply. Here is a good site with a lot of information about changing a galaga to a switcher: http://www.arcadeshop.com/galaga/galaga.htm. I like the Betson monitors OK. You might check with cherry master vendors they sell cga monitors for cherry master games sometimes cheaper if you wanna save a little $$.
Thanks for the pics let me know if I can help you more. Its been a while since I saw a Galaga with a switcher, but I do have access to one if you need more help.
Have a great week
Tim
