Gun question
Question from Edward: Good Morning, I recently purchased a Sammy Ranger Mission arcade game. The machine was purchased off auction, and needs new light guns. I know this arcade came with shotguns to being with, but due to the price, I am going to use handguns. The previous owner had two handguns connected to it, and I assume it worked with them for some time before the guns were destroyed. So, I know the game runs and functions fine, but I need to replace the guns. My question is, why are there specific light guns for specific games. I ordered a Betson Imperial which they say is for games other than Ranger mission. But, there was a Betson hooked up, or at least connected to the cabinet when I bought it. I am not sure if they did that just to sell the cabinet and make it look like it had two guns, or if it was working. My other thought process is to just buy a new gun and replace the board with a Sammy gun board. Would this work? Thanks for your help. Edward

Response from Jonathan: Edward,
The light guns themselves are the same for all light gun games; however, the way that the light guns hook up to the main board is different depending on the game itself. Most light gun games have 2 small connectors on the main board for 2 light guns. Some games have a larger connector to accommodate for extra functionality in the gun itself (such as the pump action switch on the shotgun-style light gun). Still other games use one connector for both guns (which I think is the case for Ranger Mission). If you know what the pinouts are for the connector on the game board (which should be in the manual for the game) and the connector of the light gun then you should be able to wire up any light gun to work with any game board. When Betson Imperial doesn’t list Ranger Mission as a game that the light gun supports, it could just mean that the default connector on the light gun won’t hook up to the default connector on the game board. In other words, it is not plug and play and will require some rewiring to get it to work.
Most light gun games usually have settings in the test menu that will allow you to set which type of gun you are using with the game (Ranger Mission calls this option Reload Type in the test menu). Make sure that you change this option to correspond with the guns you are using with your Ranger Mission board in order to make sure they will work properly.
Hope that helps. Thank you for your question and good luck with your repair.
