Hard wiring Jamma (video issue)

Question from Nic: I’ve got a quick question. Is it possible to hard wire directly from the RGB wiring on the JAMMA harness to the RGB composite of a TV? I ask because I have a Street Fighter 2 The New Champions CPS2 game but the cabinet is a old converted Rampart machine and I fear the old CRT is on its last leg and I’ve got this cheap LCD TV with RGB Composite just sitting around. Thanks for your time, Nic

Response from Jonathan: Nic,

The answer is probably not. While there’s an outside possibility that your LCD TV natively supports the 15 kHz frequency that arcade games use for output, the odds are not in your favor. Of course, you could try it and see what it does.

With that said, the most common way to accomplish this is to use a video converter like the Gonbes GBS-8200. Here’s a link to one on the Holland Computers website: http://www.hollandcomputers.com/store/pc/Arcade-Game-RGB-CGA-EGA-YUV-to-VGA-Arcade-HD-Converter-PCB-GBS-8200-Converts-older-arcade-systems-to-LCD-monitors-2517p6052.htm?idaffiliate=38. Basically you just hook the video wires coming from your board to this and then plug up your LCD TV using the component cable output.

One last thing, it’s important to note that most CRT problems can be repaired. It might be worth either having someone come out to look at your monitor or sending your monitor chassis off to be fixed instead of putting an LCD TV in your cabinet. While LCD screens are serviceable replacements, we still prefer to use CRT arcade monitors whenever possible as they maintain the original look and feel of the game. Of course, it’s your cabinet so the choice is up to you.

Hope that helps. Thank you for your question and good luck with your repair.
