Help diagnose my issue, please!

Question from Matt: Hey guys,

Like so many… I’m a big fan of your site! I’ve already populated my Christmas list with your DVD sets. Do you guys do Holiday specials on those things that I should tell my family about?

Now to the real issue… I’ve inherited an old Twin Cobra cabinet. When I received it, it wouldn’t power up and so I swapped out a power supply/converter with some other parts I had around. When I got it on, the picture, sound, controls all worked GREAT for about 5 minutes. Then, a light squeal started in on the back of the monitor. I disconnected the sound so you could really hear it in a video… would you mind listening in and telling me if you think a cap kit would fix it, or do you think I need a new flyback also?

Thanks for your awesome series and help! Also – is there any chance of getting the video feed onto iTunes instead of the audio feed only? I can’t find it!

Response from Jonathan: Matthew,

We do run specials on our DVDs from time to time. Subscribe to our twitter account and facebook page to be notified when specials occur.

As for your monitor question, I’m leaning more towards a new flyback based on your video. With that said, it’s a good idea to go ahead and install a cap kit while you have the chassis out. Try those two things and let us know how it goes from there.

On your question about an iTunes video feed, we’ve found that the majority of people prefer to use YouTube over downloading videos. For one, our videos are pretty large in size since we shoot in HD and most people don’t want them taking up room on their hard drives. Also, we don’t have to deal with finding somewhere to host the videos (which can get expensive) and deciding what video codec we’re going to distribute them in. YouTube takes care of these issues for us. Of course, that doesn’t mean that we won’t do it at some point in the future. We’re willing to reevaluate this situation if enough people were interested in receiving the videos in podcast form.

Thank you for your questions and good luck with your repair.
