X-Men Vs Street Fighter is a Capcom CPS-2 game. All CPS-2 games require a JAMMA harness and a kick harness to wire all of the buttons up. The manual will tell you the exact location for each wire coming from each of the harnesses. These videos discuss in detail working with the JAMMA standard to wire up a game. Also, if you need a CPS-2 kick harness you can usually find one on eBay by doing a search.

Are you talking about the flipper buttons? These are the only buttons that I can think of that are found on pinball machines. If this is the case, it just depends on the pinball machine. Just like with the X-Men Vs Street Fighter, the best place to start is to get a manual for the pinball machine you are trying to repair. There should be a schematic and/or wiring diagram inside the manual that will tell you where the flipper buttons need to be wired in order to make them work. Once they are wired to the correct spot they should work unless there are other issues (such as power issues) with your machine.
