Hydro Thunder Monitor Issues

Question from Dave: Hi guys. I’ve watched quite a few of the videos you have put up and I have learned quite a bit so thank you for that. I own 2 Midway Hydro Thunder machines. The one works fine and the other one was playable; however, just yesterday the screen finally blacked out on me. It had a dark left side of the screen and thicker dark vertical lines to the right. Now I turn it on and the screen comes on for about 2 mins then blanks out. Sounds and game still playing but unable to see. From my best guess, I’d say I should start with a cap kit. I looked at Bob’s site but it was just a listing and I have no idea which parts to get. There’s also no contact number for the company. If you could point me in the right direction I would greatly appreciate it. Thank you. Dave from New Jersey

Response from Jonathan: Dave,

First off, thank you for the kind words about our videos. We’re glad that you’ve found the content useful. Make sure you also check out our website which has additional information on the content in the videos along with many other arcade repair resources that will help you out with your future projects. Again, thanks!

As for your question, it’s probably best to start with a cap kit on this issue and go from there. According to Wells Garner, it looks like most Hydro Thunder cabinets came with a WGM2575-U4GS27J monitor installed which indicates either a K7400 / K7500 (most common), U2000 / U5000 (somewhat common) or K8000 (least common) series monitor. Now, you might look around your monitor frame, chassis and tube to see if you can find anything that confirms which monitor you are dealing with. Wells Garner usually puts stickers on the monitor to help you identify the model. There’s also a post on the KLOV forum that has some great information that should help you identify your monitor as well. Here’s the link: http://forums.arcade-museum.com/archive/index.php/t-267353.html. Once you have determined what monitor is installed in your cabinet, you should be able to order a cap kit from Bob Roberts or any of the parts suppliers under the Arcade Parts Suppliers & Distributors heading on our resources page.

Hope that helps. Thank you for your question and good luck with your repair.
