Issues with MVS cabinet Monitor and Sound

Question from Joe: Greetings! My wife just bought me an awesome 1 slot Neo Geo MVS. We got an absolutely awesome deal on it, but as seen with other aspects, getting something as a “deal” doesn’t mean that it’s a deal for no reason.

1.) The images were muddy. That and the hue would change to a yellowish color randomly.
2.) The sound was shoddy. It wouldn’t come in most of the time.

Did a replacement of the caps on both the monitor and the sound system. Also replaced the flyback on the monitor. Replacing the power supply as well, though this has nothing to do with it.. The other one was in pretty rough shape. After the replacement of the caps and flyback, the image quality is much, much better. After the replacement of the audio caps, the sound comes in a lot nicer. There are still residual problems with the machine though..

1.) The hue on the monitor still changes from clear, to white, to yellow. This changes when I restart the cab.
2.) The sound changes from normal, to loud to low. Just ordered a new amplifier due to the advice of a fellow enthusiast from the Neo Geo Facebook page.
3.) On my 161 in 1 multicart, many of the games just restart. They don’t work. Normal games do work though, so it may be an issue of being a bad build.

Any ideas what might be causing this? Any help would be most appreciated! Joe

Response from Jonathan: Joe,

First off, it looks like you’ve already made a lot of progress so congrats on that. Sounds like most of the advice you’ve gotten so far is pretty good.

The hue issue you are having might be related to an issue with a color connection, drive transistor or adjustment pot (drive and cutoff). The fact that it changes when you restart the game is strange. Does it ever occur while the game is on or does it just randomly switch every time you restart it? You might go into the test menu while the screen is displaying white properly and make sure that all of the colors are calibrated. Then, when the color issue happens again, go back into the test menu to see if one of the colors is affected. This should give you a clue as to which color is causing the problem. We would usually recommend a cap kit but since you’ve already installed one you should be good there.

The sounds issue does seem like an amplifier issue. Try that out and let us know how it goes. Of course, bad adjustment pots can also cause this so you might try replacing your volume pot as well.

On the multicart, this almost seems like the board is not getting enough voltage. I know these multicarts tend to use more power than the standard cartridges so you might try turning your power supply up a little (perhaps to 5.1 or a bit higher, I wouldn’t go past 5.2 though) to see if it makes a difference. If it doesn’t help, you might have gotten a bad cartridge as you suggested in your email.

Hope that helps. Thank you for your questions and good luck with your repairs.
