monitor focus

Question from Dave: Hello, first I would to say thanks for the great videos you have posted on YouTube. I just bought an original 1980 Midway Pac Man cocktail game. It appears the monitor has been recently replaced with new board and flyback. It’s working very good except every other day I have to re-focus (i.e. adjust the flyback) then its good for a day or so. Any suggestions? Keep up the good work. Thank you, Dave

Response from Jonathan: Dave,

First off, thank you for your kind words about our videos on YouTube. We’re glad that our content has been helpful to you. Make sure you check out our website and our podcast for even more great information on arcade repair.

As for your question, it definitely sounds like a monitor issue. This focus problem is very strange if indeed this is a new chassis and flyback in your cabinet. Just wondering if this is a new chassis or a refurbished chassis. If it’s a refurbished chassis, it could be that the technician who worked on it did just enough to get it working but did not realize there were other problems. We usually recommend replacing the flyback but if that’s been replaced recently (with the correct part, of course) it should be good.

Other than that, installing a cap kit usually helps this issue as well. It could be that some of the caps are starting to “bleed” additional voltage which is throwing your power/focus out of whack. Check out our post on Installing A Cap Kit for more information. This could be the part that the technician neglected in his repair. It also could have been working on his bench and the caps didn’t start to bleed the voltage until you put some time in on the monitor. Hard to know for sure but definitely worth trying this especially if the caps on the chassis look like they haven’t been replaced in a while.

Hope that helps. Thank you for your question and good luck with your repair.
