Ms Pacman joystick wonky

I just bought a Ms. Pacman cocktail table machine and while I’m quite happy with my purchase, it’s got some issues that I’m trying to fix. Your videos have been a great start for me, so thank you for that.
I watched the video you made on repairing a joystick, which helped me understand how they work, but it didn’t address the particular problem I’m having. Basically, “edge movements” (a term I’ve made up) — when moving the joystick from a far right to far up position (for example) without returning to the “home” position, have problems. It’s a bit hard to explain in written word, so I made a couple videos to show you what I’m talking about:
Any ideas on how to resolve this? I asked on a forum and I got a couple different responses, but I’d rather have a bit of confidence before I go in for a repair.

Ms. Pac Man machines use a 4 way joystick that only registers the first switch that is hit. In order for another direction to register, the previous directional switch must be released. This is how most classic arcade game joysticks work. Many JAMMA arcade games like Street Fighter 2 use an 8 way joystick that allows for diagonal movements.
It looks like you have an 8 way joystick in your game which might be why you’re having issues when you move the joystick diagonally. You might be able to find a restrictor plate for your current joystick but it’s probably best to replace it with an actual 4 way joystick.
