NBA JAM TE sound problems and update
Question from Joe: Hey guys,
I finally got my monitor issues fixed! It ended up I had two ground wires on my Jamma harness that had been cut and just twisted together. When I touched them to check the connection the picture came in perfectly. Now I have as good as new looking monitor. The TV tube swap was so easy once I found a compatible TV. I was able to leave everything on the new tube, the yoke, grounding wire and degaussing wire. I only had to splice the yoke wires to the old connector and plug everything else in. The picture looks great!
Now my issue is no sound. I have checked the pot which is soldered on the sound board. The voltage going through it changes when I turn the knob, so I assume it is OK. I did a continuity test on all the wires to the speakers and they seem to be good. I checked that the speakers actually worked. I also checked the voltage at the Jamma harness as specified in the operator’s manual. I have also checked the ribbon cable between the sound board and pcb. I made sure the red line was plugged into the # 1 pin on both boards. I thought the cable may be bad so I did some improvising and found a new hard drive ribbon cable and plugged it up in place, with no change. I tried reseating the chips on the sound board and all the traces looked good. I have not examined the pcb yet.
Do you have any suggestions on what I should try next?
By the way my voltages at the Jamma harness are: 11.86, 4.82, and -5.23. I know the 5 volt is more important to be right on than the 12 volt, but is the positive or negative 5 volt more important.
I love all your videos and podcasts.
Keep up the good work,
Joe

Response from Tim: Thanks so much for the update and for sticking with it! Glad to hear the tube swap went good too. Check your pots with the Ohm setting on your meter which looks like an upside down horseshoe. Make sure the ohms change. Great job of troubleshooting it down to the board level which is where I am guessing the problem lies. Replace any capacitors in that area or transistors. +5v is the most important. Tim
