NBA Jam
Question from Josh: Hi there,
Firstly, I love your website, you’ve done a great job and taught me a lot!
I’ve been browsing through, and searched high and low(so I hope I’m not re-asking a posted question) the site for some help.
I have a project I’d like to do. I have a working NBA Jam machine that I’d like to display on a movie theater screen, or at least a large television screen. I’d like to end up with the game and cabinet intact and working like normal, but just able to hook up to an auxiliary video source as well such as VGA, S Video, Composite, Component, or HDMI(doubtful). However, I know there are video limitations as well as 15k limitations and compatibility as well.
Is this possible?
I’ve found this part that seems like it may help me, but I’m not entirely sure. Any advice or help would certainly be appreciated. Although I don’t have a lot of experience with arcade games, I’d [like to]consider my skills between intermediate and advanced.
Thanks for all you guys do!

Response from Jonathan: Josh,
Thank you for the kind words. We’re glad that you find our website informative.
As for your question, what you want to do is definitely possible. You will need to splice into the video wires going from the JAMMA harness to the monitor. This second set of wires will need to go to a video converter board. The link that you sent in your original email is actually the opposite of what you want. This board is for hooking a VGA signal to an arcade monitor (lot of people use these types of converters for MAME cabinets). With that said, the GBS-8220 video converter from Gonbes should do what you want to do. This board takes in a 15 kHz monitor signal and upconverts it to VGA. So here’s a couple of links.

You might notice that I put a product link for JAMMA Boards and Cajun Arcade. We recommend Cajun Arcade as Michael (the guy who runs it) is usually a bit cheaper, offers very fast shipping and excellent customer service. You might also mention to him that you were referred by the Arcade Repair Tips guys.
Hope that helps, Josh. Thank you for your question and good luck with your project.
