Power supply capacitor size

Question from Todd: Hello, I have an Area 51 game that is blowing fuses in the power supply. I replaced he fuse and saw that when it blew again as I turned it on, a capacitor next to it lit up too. I pulled the cap and it tested short. My problem is that I lost the cap before noting the size to get a replacement. Do you know where I might be able to find a schematic to check the size? Thanks, Todd

Response from Jonathan: Todd,

In order to figure out the capacitor value, we will need to locate a schematic for the power supply that your Area 51 cabinet currently has installed in it. Sometimes finding these schematics can be pretty difficult depending on the brand and model of power supply. Please let us know what kind of power supply you have in your cabinet and we’ll do our best to help you locate the schematics.

With all that said, we typically don’t repair these types of power supplies. While we do rebuild classic power supplies in games such as Galaga and Centipede, we tend to just replace standard switching and ATX style power supplies like the one in your Area 51 cabinet. These power supplies are readily available and pretty reasonably priced considering all. For example, Twisted Quarter has a drop in replacement for your power supply listed at $53.99 which is a fairly cheap price to get your game up and running. Plus, even if you do replace the fuse and capacitor, there could be other parts in the power supply that are getting ready to fail due to age. Replacing it with a new power supply should keep your game running longer without worrying about other parts in the power supply that might fail in the future.

Hope that helps. Thank you for your question and please let us know if we can be of more assistance in the future.
