Question about CPS-3 suicide

Question from Ian: My name is Ian and I’m from Toronto Ontario Canada. I just bought a used arcade machine with Street Fighter 3rd Strike. After I bought this, I read that the battery needs to be changed every five years because it’s a CPS-3 game. Once the battery dies, it wipes the memory and you lose everything. I was wondering how easy it is to change or can you do something so it never needs to be changed again? Any help you can provide would be amazing. Thanks, Ian

Response from Jonathan: Ian,

Here is a link to some instructions for replacing the battery on a CPS-3 system board: http://cps2shock.emu-france.info/cps3/. We have never done this procedure ourselves but the process doesn’t look too hard if you are somewhat familiar with soldering. As far as a permanent fix to the suicide problem, Darksoft has a workaround but it works a little differently. This post on KLOV should give you more details: http://forums.arcade-museum.com/archive/index.php/t-257631.html. You can also checkout Darksoft’s forum at http://www.arcade-projects.com/.

Hope that helps. Thank you for your question and good luck with your repair.
