Question About Flyback
Question from Grant: Hello, I’m sure you get a thousand emails an hour with questions and I appreciate you looking at mine. I am a novice in the arcade repair field, really I know just enough to get into trouble. I swapped a monitor on my Frogger machine since I had a spare one laying around and after I got it all connected I was fiddling with all of the adjustment pods and trying to get it to look perfect and I think I may have damaged something by turning up the Screen Brightness pot on the flyback too far. Everything went super white and washed out and now it sort of looks like it is only displaying RED. I fiddled with the red blue and green signal wires and there was no change. Did I damage something? If so is there anything I can do to repair it or should I just get a new monitor? Thanks a bunch! Grant

Response from Jonathan: Grant,
It doesn’t sounds like a flyback issue per se. Yes, it could be a flyback issue but the fact that it’s only displaying red sounds more like a complication with your neck board. Perhaps a short in the neck board connection with the tube or an issue with the color drive transistors. We recommend checking out our post on Checking A Monitor Tube for some troubleshooting techniques that may help your problem. Also, be sure to check the input wires that run from your Frogger board to your monitor as there could be a short there as well. Of course, please contact us again if you continue to have problems after trying some of the techniques we’ve discussed in this email and in the post mentioned above.
Hope that helps. Thank you for your question and good luck with your repair.
