Question Concerning B+ Voltage on Donkey Kong Arcade (SANYO 20-EZV)

Question from Al: Hello, I had a few questions about the B+ voltage for my machine, and if I may have fried something. I had just installed a cap kit on this machine and everything seemed to be fine afterwards. I was just trying to fine tune the adjustments for the screen and picture. So I went to check the B+ voltage and it read 90V and from my research I found that it needed to be about 108V. So I went to make the adjustments to it and almost as soon as the non-metallic driver touched the pot, something popped and the reading went up to 123-124V and will not move what so ever no matter how much adjustment is made. The screen is now washed out quite a bit but you can still make out what’s there and the screen keeps just spinning to the right. So I was just wondering if I may have just fried the thing or if I possibly just blew a fuse or would I be looking into a new board or voltage regulator or something.

I hope you guys can give me some direction and help me rectify the problem. My goal is to fix this machine and give it to my Dad for Christmas this year since it is one of his favorite past times as a teenager.

Thanks in Advance, Al

Background Information:
As far as my abilities, I have never worked on an arcade machine before this one. I am well versed in mechanics and electronics being as I have been an aircraft and automotive mechanic for quite a while and I fly BlackHawk helicopters for the US Army. So I have been well trained in operations and maintenance of electronics and circuit boards.

As far as the machine, I found it on the side of the road, someone was throwing it away because they didn’t have time to fix it (so they said). So I picked it up and talked to the owner and they explained that it just needed the cap kit and just didn’t have any interest in fixing it, but gave me the cap kit for me to take with it. So I installed the kit and it worked beautifully.

Response from Jonathan: Al,

Yes, you can check the fuses at locations F301 and F302 to see if they are blown but if you’re getting some sort of picture the fuses are probably fine. B+ related issues such as this are usually due to a problem with either IC601 or Q901. Check both of these parts to make sure they are operating correctly. Now, you could have a problem with the B+ voltage pot (VR601), a bad flyback (T452), or an issue with the HOT (Q902) but those issues are less common in our experience. Still, it might be a good idea to check them if the problem continues. Hope that helps.
