Question/Opinion Needed About Horizontal Collapse
Question from Josh: Hi Arcade Repair Tips, I’ve got a question/opinion to ask y’all. I just got done watching y’alls “Repairing Monitor Collapse Issues” video on YouTube and I’m also friends with y’all on Facebook but I’m down here in Beaumont, TX and I’ve been fighting arcade monitor issues with my Cruis’n World Arcade Monitor. I’ve done a cap kit, new flyback and a new HOT and I’ve been fighting a what I’ve just learned possibly tonight that I’ve got horizontal collapse (vertical line) in my 25″ monitor. Now I’ve read that it’s best to just replace both horizontal and vertical IC’s because on a horizontal collapse that it could affect both IC chips due to the horizontal running through both chips. But what I’m asking from you is, in your opinion, do you agree its a horizontal collapse or something worse? Thanks Again, Josh

Yes, this does look like horizontal collapse and it would be good to replace both the horizontal and vertical ICs. Some other causes for this issue can be a bad horizontal width coil or bad polypropylene (i.e. Chiclet as Tim calls them) capacitors if your monitor has them. Check out our post on Adjusting The Horizontal Width Coil for more information on that particular part.
Keep in mind that digital monitors (like the Wells Gardner D9200) sometimes have settings in the on screen menu that can cause issues like this as well. Of course, there are ways to reset these settings and we can help you with that if you do indeed have a digital monitor.
