Questions about arcade machine repair
Question from Larissa: Greetings, I have been having troubles with some of our arcade machines. The big issue being coins are constantly being eaten. Our Blue Streak Air Hockey table, Silent Scope, and Rush the Rock racing more often than not have been eating coins and causing trouble. The Rush the Rock game will not start. It cannot be taken off the testing screen. If you have any tips or ideas what may be causing these issues, please let me know. It would be much appreciated.
Normally we contact SML entertainment for repairs or help; however, they never return our calls and it is a great hassle to get any sort of help from them. Further, if you know any respectable repair companies (preferably in the Alberta area) for arcade games that you could share it would be a great help.
Regards, Larissa

Response from Jonathan: Larissa,
Typically when arcade games are taking coins but not giving credits it has to do with the coin mech, the coin switch itself or the wiring going to it. You can test all of these parts by powering on the game, opening the coin door and dropping coins into the coin slots. As long as the coins drop through the coin mech, hit the metal wire connected to the coin switch and the game gives a credit it should be fine. If that’s not happening, you need to figure out where the coin is getting hung up.
A lot of times coins will get hung up in the coin mech. If this is the case, you might need to replace the coin mech with a new one. If the coins fall through the coin mech but don’t register the credit then it might be an issue with the coin switch or the wiring going to it. Sometimes this wiring can become disconnected or frayed over time from opening/closing the coin door. Make sure that all of the wiring is connected properly. If everything is connected but you continue to have issue then you may need to replace the coin switch altogether.
Now, your Rush the Rock sounds like a different issue. It could be that the test mode switch inside the game is stuck. Usually test switches are located right inside the coin door. You might try pushing the switch a couple of times to see if you can get it unstuck. Keep in mind that you need to power off the game and turn it on again to see if you are still having the same issue. If the problem continues, you might try disconnecting the wires from the test switch to see if you can get the game to start off. Also, make sure all of the dip switches on the board are in the OFF position as this game does not use hardware dip switches for it’s settings.
Unfortunately we do not know anyone who repairs arcade games in the Alberta area. I will try and ask around to see if I can find someone. I do have some family in Calgary but unfortunately none of them know how to fix arcade games. Hopefully we can find someone that can help you out.
Hope that helps. Thank you for your questions and good luck with your repairs.
