Repair project

Question from Greg: I have an old arcade cabinet that had a 25 inch screen in it. It was pretty much stripped when I got it so I decided to run my NES in it. I took a 25 inch tv and board out of it’s case and mounted it in the machine. The project is done and works great. I was just wondering if I should worry about radiation from the tv seems how I took it out of its original case and put it in the arcade cabinet? Thanks.

Response from Jonathan: Greg,

Radiation should not be a problem. It’s not the plastic case that protects you from radiation. Most CRT based screens made after the 1960s have high voltage protection circuitry that will shut down power to the monitor if the voltage gets too high. Also, they also started making the monitor tubes out of leaded glass around this time which should protect you from radiation as well.

While it’s possible to get some radiation from a color picture tube, the voltages that arcade monitors, televisions and other CRT based screens run at is simply not enough to generate a harmful amount. I’ve heard that the flyback would probably blow up before reaching this voltage which would kill the power to the monitor anyways. Overall, I think you’re safe. =)

Hope that helps. Thank you for your question and good luck with your repair.
