Sega New Astro City with a multi-game board
Question from Matt: Hi, I wonder if you can please help me. I own a vertical Sega New Astro City currently fitted with a working Raiden II board. It works great. I recently purchased a multi-game board – a ‘Game Elf 412-in-1 Classic Vertical Multi-game JAMMA PCB’ The problem is when I connect the JAMMA harness to the ‘Game Elf’ – nothing works and the cabinet / psu keeps clicking and rotating the coin counter. I have been careful to ensure the harness is connected the right way around. Even with the JAMMA harness not connected to anything at all, when I power up the cabinet / psu just keep clicking and the coin counter keeps rotating. I reconnected the RAIDEN II board and everything runs normal again. Any idea what I need to do? Very much appreciate if you have any advise. Many thanks, Matt

It sounds like there’s a wiring/pinout difference between the Raiden II board and your Game Elf 412-in-1 board. In fact, looking at the pinouts in the manual for each game, it looks like pin 8 (the coin counter pin) is omitted on the Game Elf board but works on the Raiden board. If the Game Elf board is shorting that pin to ground then that could be what’s causing your coin counters to go crazy. Also, it could be that the clicking noise is coming from the coin counters instead of the power supply or the coin counters could be causing the power supply to short causing the clicking noise. Of course, if you don’t care about the coin counters you could cut the wires going to your harness and that should stop them from registering. This should not affect the game play of your board.
The only other problem I see is that the second to last pin on the Game Elf board is a button while it’s a ground on the Raiden board which could cause the board to register that button as being pressed down all of the time. For what it’s worth, the Raiden board is actually wired with the JAMMA standard while the Game Elf board uses a modified JAMMA pinout. Of course, don’t take my word for it. Check out the manuals yourself and you should see what I mean.

In other words, you will have to do some rewiring to get the Game Elf board to run properly in your cabinet. The process is not too bad and if you have any question please let us know. Hope that helps. Thank you for your question and good luck with your repair.
