Space Invaders

Question from Riven: Hello! Hoping for some help! I purchased a Space Invaders upright console from a guy today for $100. I knew it had this issue and I know these machines aren’t too bad to repair. I fixed a Ms. Pac Man recently. I was hoping you may have an idea what’s wrong!

Response from Jonathan: Riven,

We have a saying here at Arcade Repair Tips: ASAP (Always Start At Power). Start off this repair by making sure that the power supply is supplying the correct voltage to your board and the other parts of your cabinet. Check out this post on How to test a Space Invaders/SI Deluxe Power Supply from Elektron Forge for some tips on checking the power supply in your Space Invaders cabinet. We also highly recommend checking out the Space Invaders page on brentradio.com for manuals and other tips for working on Space Invaders cabinets. Our post on Checking A Classic Power Supply should also help you with this process.

If the voltage is correct but you continue to have problems then you may have an issue with the board itself. At this point, you might check out our post on Inspecting An Arcade Board for some steps you can take to get your board working again. Of course, there could be a problem with the board that requires replacing parts, rebuilding traces, etc. At this point, you might see if you can find some repair logs for Space Invaders out on the web. You could also try sending your board out for repair to one of the people listed under the appropriate heading on our resources page. Elektron Forge in particular is very good at repairing Space Invaders boards.

Hope that helps. Thank you for your question and good luck with your repair.
