Street Fighter 2 power issues

Question from Joe: Firstly, great resources. I’m going to continue looking through, but will pose my questions to see if you can advise. I’ve got a dedicated Street Fighter 2 Champion Edition cabinet. I’ve had it for years and it has always been used intermittently as it was based at my parents. Today I’ve finally gotten around to moving to my house. It suffered no hard knocks, etc. during the move and was handled with care. I placed it in position, and it started working fine. The monitor does sometimes take a while to settle, which I put down to the age and the fact it was in a garage. It was working fine and my kids were playing on it. After about 15 mins, it just stopped. The screen went blue, and now there is no sound from the game at all. The marquee light works and the monitor turns on. I’ve tried attaching another games via the JAMMA harness, and nothing, no response. Interestingly I tried it again moments ago and it tripped out the fuse box, so I guess there is an issue! I’ve looked for burn marks, etc. and can’t see any. The wiring I can see from the front all looks ok also. There was a faint hissing sound, which I thought could be the sound coming through at a very low, temporary level. If you’re able to advise, it would be appreciated! Many thanks, Joe

Response from Jonathan: Joe,

From your description, it sounds like you’re having some sort of power issue with your cabinet. We highly recommend tracing down your wiring starting at the plug coming from the wall. Make sure that the AC voltage is coming into your cabinet and that it’s being distributed properly to all of the different parts inside (switching power supply, monitor, marquee light, etc.). This page on AC wiring by Bob Roberts should help you understand how your cabinet should be wired. Check to make sure there are no frayed, loose, or disconnected voltage wires in your cabinet as these can cause breaker issues like what you are experiencing currently. It’s also important to check the switching power supply in your game as this is what supplies the DC voltage that the game board needs to run. Since the game is not running currently, it could mean either the voltage getting to the board is too low or that it’s not getting any voltage at all. Check out our post on Checking And Replacing A Power Supply for more information on this process. Feel free to contact us again if you continue to have issues with your game after checking these areas.

Hope that helps. Thank you for your question and good luck with your repair.
