Street Fighter issue, 1987 6-button cab

Question from Bracey: Hey guys! I’ve been trying to figure this out for awhile now and haven’t had any luck. I’ve got an original Street Fighter 1 dedicated cab, which is JAMMA with a couple of extra connectors. I assumed the 2 extra connectors were kick harnesses for the extra buttons on P1 and P2 side.

When I swap in any other board, it works fine except the speakers never click on and there’s no sound at all.

At first I thought it was an issue with my tester board, but it appears to be fine. When I fire back up the SF1 board but leave OFF the harnesses, same deal – boots up, no speakers. Upon attaching them again, the speakers come on normally.

It appears that the wiring on this machine is a little different than most other JAMMA cabs of the time, and I can’t figure out how to get sound working on any other board outside of SF1. I managed to find someone else online with a dedicated SF1 and they had similar issues and were never able to solve them.

Hopefully you guys can help me shed some light on this! I would love to be able to use my other boards fully in this cab, as it’s the only one I’ve got running at the moment.

Thanks,
Bracey

Response from Jonathan: Bracey,

It sounds like your Street Fighter cabinet was wired using the stereo audio connector (located in position CN6) on the board instead of the JAMMA harness which would explain why you don’t get any sound out of any other JAMMA boards. Our friend Bob Roberts actually made an original Street Fighter diagram that shows this to be the case. Here’s a link: http://www.therealbobroberts.net/sflyot.jpg

In order to get your speakers to work with the other JAMMA boards, you will need to move one (or both) sets of wires located on connector CN6 to the pins 10 & L positions on the JAMMA harness respectively. Here a link to the JAMMA pinouts in case you are not familiar with them: http://www.arcaderepairtips.com/jamma.html. Now, it may be possible to splice into the wires located on connector CN6 instead of moving them to the JAMMA harness which would theoretically allow you to keep the stereo output from your original Street Fighter board AND get sound from other JAMMA boards but you will need to test this to see if it’s indeed the case.

Hope that helps. Thank you for your question and good luck with your repair.
