Switching PS for Galaga

Question from Louie: Hello, I was looking at replacing my Galaga PS with a new switching one. My old PS is now smoking and actually starts to glow red hot when the game is plugged in. Needless to say that is a bit concerning. From what I have seen in other converted Galaga games, it looks like the new switching PS is still powered by the old PS in the bottom of the cab. One point in case is someone I know has a Galaga that was converted to a 60-1 game. The Switching PS looks like it’s powering the board, but the old PS in the bottom of the game is powering the transformer which is powering the monitor and marquee. Although this may of been a fast hack to sell it at an auction, which is where he bought it. Can I install a switching PS that bypasses the old PS and transformer. Thanks, Louie

Response from Jonathan: Louie,

Yes, you can install a switching power supply and bypass the old PS and transformer. The power supply conversion kit that you saw in that 60-in-1 Galaga conversion is common as this is the way that many conversion/upgrade kits work. With that said, Arcade Shop also has the directions on their web site to install a switching power supply without their conversion kit. Here’s a link: http://www.arcadeshop.com/gal-tips.htm. Just do a search for Installing a switching power supply on the page and you should find the steps you need to take. Keep in mind that if your old transformer also serves as an isolation transformer for your monitor then you may need to purchase a standalone isolation transformer to replace it.

Hope that helps. Thank you for your question and good luck with your repair.
