Trouble with doing the tube color test
Question from Daniel: Hi Jonathan!
Hope you are having a fantastic Christmas and holiday. It is ridiculously cold up here in Canada. Anyways, I had a quick question. I was checking the colors on a Magic Sword arcade machine by doing the tube test like the video on your dvd set recommended by very briefly shorting out the different connections on the back of the neckboard until you get the one that does the green color, one that does the blue color, and one that does the red color.
Well I started the tube test with the game running and had picture until I shorted the very first pin in the bottom left which i’ve highlighted. After i did that, the image disappeared and now I can only hear sound and get no video. Can you tell me what I did wrong and why this happened and how to prevent it in the future?
I’ve attached pictures of the monitor chassis and the components.

Response from Jonathan: Daniel,
Sorry for the slow response. We always get inundated with questions during December and we usually take off the last 2 weeks of the year for holiday events and things. Tim and I also have full time jobs that tend to interfere with answering questions as well. With all of our excuses out of the way, let’s get to your question.
With that said, here’s our friend Michael’s explanation of what happened: more than likely you touched the G2 wire (focus) and probably shorted out the HV section. It may have just blew a fuse depending on the chassis. Check the main fuse and if that is blown check the HOT. If the HOT checks bad, just replace it and the fuse. If the HOT is good then you may get by with just a new fuse. If the fuse checks good, then the HOT could still be bad with a small ohm resister open off the collector of the transistor. In that case, the resistor and the HOT will need to be replaced.
Hope that helps. Thank you for your question and good luck with your repair.
