Unable to get Vertical Hold to work….Please advise.

Question from Wesley: Hi. We have a Paperboy arcade game and we are unable to get the vertical hold to “fix” the image for longer than 15 minutes or so, despite adjusting it using the knob. How would we go about repairing that? Can we replace the monitor for a new one and get it sorted that way? Appreciate any guidance you can provide. Tkx much. Wesley

Response from Jonathan: Wesley,

Typically when you cannot get your picture to hold it is either a problem with the sync wiring or the vertical hold potentiometer (or pot). If this is a dedicated Paperboy and you haven’t changed out the monitor (or monitor chassis) recently then the sync wiring should be fine which would lead us to a potentiometer issue. You might try replacing the potentiometer with a new one to see if that solves the issue. They usually use 5k pots for these adjustments which can be obtained through Bob Roberts or other arcade parts sellers.

I would also recommend Installing A Cap Kit on the monitor while you have the chassis out to repair the pot. While this is not a requirement to get the monitor working, it is just a good practice as caps tend to have problems over time. Of course, you can skip this step if the monitor has had a cap kit installed in the last couple of years or so.

Hope that helps. Thank you for your question and good luck with your repair.
