Virtua Cop 2 monitor shuts off
Question from Corey: I just recently picked up a Virtua Cop 2 arcade cabinet from a Goodwill of all places. I brought it home and the game seems to work, and I can enter test mode and everything seems to test out fine. My big problem is that when something with color comes on the monitor, the monitor shuts off. It works fine with the startup screen and it displays fine on the test screen, but if I enter the CRT test screen or let the game try to load, it displays for about 1 second and then the monitor shuts off. Restarting the console turns the monitor back on. I’m not really sure what this could be. Any help or knowledge you could pass on would be greatly appreciated.

Response from Jonathan: Corey,
It sounds like your Virtua Cop 2 monitor is going into high voltage shutdown for some reason. It could be caused by some cold or cracked solder joints, an issue with your B+ voltage, some bad parts in the high voltage section of your monitor chassis, or a number of other things. Since your monitor is somewhat working, it might be good to start off your repair by touching up any cold or cracked solder joints on your monitor to see if it helps the issue. This will ensure that all of the parts on the monitor chassis are making a good connection to the board.
If the problem persists after touching up the solder then it’s possible that some electronics parts could be bad on your monitor chassis. It’s hard to know exactly which parts without knowing the brand and model of your monitor. At this point, you might try looking on the monitor chassis for this information or you could try comparing your chassis to the pictures on the What‘s My Monitor page by Bob Roberts. Please let us know what monitor chassis you have and we’ll try to give you a better diagnosis of what’s going on with it.
Hope that helps. Thank you for your question and good luck with your repair.
