WG K7000 no power

Question from Paul: Trying to figure out how big of a mess I made. I have a Mortal Kombat game with a WG K7000 (motherboard p447 with neck board P456) 19″ monitor. I recently put new caps in. I managed to replace c204 on the neck board and installed backward. Needless to say I plug it in and see smoke come out the back. I replaced the c204 cap and installed the correct direction. I now have no power to the monitor.

I was looking at the caps and it looked like c50 might be shot too, but looking at the schematic it didn’t seem like a c204 would cause c50 issues. Any thoughts on the path to follow on repair? Did I fry the flyback? I have the manual and schematics but I am not familiar with reading and making sense of these things.

Thanks for any information,
Paul

Response from Jonathan: Paul,

Yes, it is possible that some other part (such as your flyback) went out. At this point, you probably just need to start checking the high voltage section of the monitor chassis to see where the voltage is dying (i.e. B+ voltage at resistor R301 should be 123 VDC, the Horizontal Output Transistor (or HOT) at Q11, the diodes at D19-D22, etc.). You mentioned that C50 looks shot, the capacitors in the 50s (i.e. C50, C55, C56, C57, etc.) are part of the high voltage section so be sure to replace any of them if they look fried or shot.

There’s also a great flowchart by Randy Fromm that can help you with your high voltage issues. Here’s a link to it for you to reference: http://s172.photobucket.com/user/modessitt/media/k7000flowchart.jpg.html. Try the things we discuss above and the other areas discussed in the flowchart and see if it helps your issue. Of course, please contact us again if you have any specific questions about your problem and we’ll try to help you out.

Hope that helps. Thank you for your question and good luck with your repair.
