Wizard of Wor Image Inquiry

Question from Doug: What up, fellas! I was just about to inquire locally for repairing my Wizard of Wor arcade coin-op and then recalled Arcade Repair Tips might be able to help troubleshoot. The machine has been this way for about 3 years. Attached video is what I see maybe 5 seconds after turning the game on and it’ll continue until turned off. I understand the monitor capacitor stores energy, otherwise my understanding of these machines is about as novice as it gets. Appreciate any insight, advice and/or archived video repair videos you might have for this type of issue. Y’all keep on keepin’ on, Doug

Response from Jonathan: Doug,

It looks like your Wizard of Wor is stuck in some sort of boot loop. Whenever we have problems with a game booting up, we always start with the power supply. You want to make sure that the board is getting the correct voltage to the correct places. Unfortunately Wizard of Wor has several different boards with different connectors supplying power to each board which can make checking the voltage challenging. In the manual on page 101, it talks about some of the test points on the back panel board PC which is a great place to start your voltage checks. Since Wizard of Wor is a bit more complicated to check the voltage on, our videos aren’t going to be real helpful but we do have some on Checking And Replacing A Power Supply and Checking A Classic Power Supply that might be helpful.

If the voltage is correct but you’re still having the problem then it’s probably related to your board. At this point, you can try some of the techniques listed in our post on Inspecting An Arcade Board to see if they help solve your problem. Other than that, you will probably need some additional equipment and a whole lot of time to get this board issue fixed. It would probably be best at this point to send the board off for repair if you’re not comfortable troubleshooting these types of issues yourself. We have a list of board repair guys at http://www.arcaderepairtips.com/resources/ under the Board (PCB) Repair & Component Sales heading that might be able to help you out if you want to go that route.

Hope that helps. Thank you for your question and good luck with your repair.
