Asteroids playing blind question
Question from Jaime: Hello, I have been trying to research the playing blind problem I am having with my Asteroids game. I opened the back and I have a glow on the neck and that is where my research stops. Everything tells me what to check if there is no glow but I do have one and no picture. Can you give me an idea where to begin? The only adjustment I have is a focus adjustment. The game was working and it went blank. I watched some of your videos and checked for loose connections and fuses and they seem fine. Any help would be appreciated.

P.S. I attached a pic of the glow I have

Response from Jonathan: Jaime,
From your description, we’re not quite sure that your Asteroids game is actually playing blind. When we use that terminology, it means that you should be able to play the game (i.e. hear the game playing) even though the picture is missing on the monitor. So, let’s turn on the game and try to play it just like you did before you started having your issues. If you do not hear the game playing then you could actually have a problem with your Asteroids board or power supply and not your monitor.
In this case, we recommend checking the power supply to make sure the board is getting the correct voltage before suspecting an issue wit the board itself. Check out our post on Checking A Classic Power Supply for more information. Once you are satisfied that the board is getting is getting the correct voltage, you might move on to Inspecting An Arcade Board to see if you can identify any bad areas or parts on your Asteroids board.
Now, let’s say that the game DOES play blind. At this point, we recommend checking all of the connections between your board and your monitor to make sure everything is working properly. Specifically look for any damaged wires or corroded pins as these issues can cause problems like this. There are also several fuses on the deflection board that we recommend checking as well. Check out our post on Checking Fuses With A Multimeter for more information on how to properly check these fuses.
Hope that helps. Thank you for your question and good luck with you repair.
