Convergence or Tuning? Or something else?

Question from Adrian: I have a Neo Geo 4 Slot with a Wells Gardner 7000. The chassis has a new cap kit installed as of December 2017. I’ve recently noticed the some very small color bleeding like effect occurring intermittently while playing.

For example, in Fatal Fury 2, I can see a small amount of green appear in the life bar as i take damage (see photo). I also see small lines coming off of the corner of the boxes which are displayed after each bout in the game (see photo). I’ve also seen it in the clock on the top of the screen (see photo). In Magician Lord, I see some green before the level starts and they show a photo of the mid boss (see photo).

For the most part, I do not see this behavior throughout the entire screen, only at certain moments. I also can see this bleeding/smearing effect on the Neo Geo bootup screen. It is smeared on the edges of “Neo Geo” but quickly goes away as the monitor powers on fully. However in the other examples it remains.

Finally, in the test grid pattern, I can see what I believe to be some smearing in the top left and bottom left but I’m no expert. Is this a convergence issue or a color tuning issue? Or is it something else?

Thanks for any input you may have.
Adrian

Response from Jonathan: Adrian,

It looks like your green drive is probably turned up just a bit too much on your monitor. It’s common to have color bleeding issues after a cap kit as sometimes arcade owners will over-adjust the colors in order to make up for the caps not working properly. The reason you don’t see if all the time is probably because the color green may not be on the screen all of the time. Check out our post on Adjusting An Arcade Monitor for more information about adjusting the color drive potentiometers. Hope that helps.
