Monitor curl
Question from Jeff: Hello guys. I bought a few games. I am looking at another game to buy elsewhere. It’s a Galaga, because we all need a Galaga. Anyway, the monitor curls up on the right side and quivers slightly. The seller said she has banged it a couple times and it went away and started it about a year ago. But when I looked at it, it stayed curled. Is this a big deal? I know these things are complicated. I didn’t have time to mess around with pots too much in her garage. What can I expect to pay for a cap kit or other replacement items it may involve? Cheers, Jeff

Response from Jonathan: Jeff,
Monitor curl like you are describing can be related to a couple of areas. We always recommend starting off a repair like this by trying the adjustments on the monitor. Check out our post on Adjusting An Arcade Monitor for more information. Make sure you try the horizontal and vertical sync/hold adjustments as they can sometimes correct this issue. Another adjustment to try which we don’t talk about in our post is the B+ voltage. If the B+ voltage is not correct, it can lead to some monitor curl like you are experiencing.
If the adjustments do not remove the curl, then it might be time to install a cap kit on your monitor. Check out our post on Installing A Cap Kit for more information. If a cap has gone bad on your monitor chassis, it can leak or restrict voltage to other parts of your board which can cause problems such as monitor curl. Cap kits are pretty cheap. They run anywhere from $15-30 depending on the monitor. We have a list of entities that sell cap kits (and other arcade parts) under the Arcade Parts Suppliers & Distributors heading on our resources page. Syracuse Semiconductor is one of our favorite cap kit suppliers. We have used them several times and have always found their cap kits to be very good.
It’s also important to note that some monitors (such as the Electrohome G07) can have issues with certain arcade boards. In the case of the G07, there are instructions you can follow to install a sync upgrade which will help the problem. It just depends on the model of your monitor chassis as to whether or not a sync upgrade may be needed. Of course, please contact us if you have any specific questions about your issue and we’ll try to help you out further.
Hope that helps. Thank you for you question and good luck with your repair.
