screen problem

Question from Joshua: Hello, I just recently pitched my first arcade machine, a Marvel vs. Capcom, and it has a few minor problems. The first problem is that the screen has great color but the image bounces around sometimes like it is unstable. The second problem is the volume is very low even when turned all the way up. Thank you for your help.

Response from Jonathan: Joshua,

First off, congrats on getting you first arcade machine! Hope that it provides you with hours of enjoyment.

As for your questions, bouncing (or pulsing) images on your monitor are usually caused by some cold/cracked solder joints on your chassis. You might try removing your monitor chassis and inspecting it to see if you can find any joints like this then touch them up with some fresh solder using a soldering iron. You can also try adjusting your horizontal and vertical hold (and maybe sync) pots on the monitor to see if it makes a difference in your picture. Check out our post on Adjusting An Arcade Monitor for more information.

On the volume issue, make sure that you are not only adjusting the volume knob in your cabinet but that you’re also turning the volume up on the board. CPS-2 boards (like Marvel vs. Capcom) should have 2 buttons on the side of the board itself that control the volume. Try pressing the volume up button to see if it increases the amount of volume coming from your cabinet. Some CPS-2 games connect up to a separate audio amp board. If this is the case with your cabinet, make sure the volume is also turned up on this board as well. Other than that, you might have a problem with the audio amp built on the board itself. At this point, you can try replacing the capacitors (or caps) on your Marvel vs. Capcom board to see if it makes a difference.

Hope that helps. Thank you for your questions and good luck with your repairs.
