Strange warp in Sanyo monitor

Question from Jeff: I am considering buying a Donkey Kong 3 and converting it to a DK. The cabinet is beautiful, the sound is crisp, and the controls work without hesitation. The only thing is…it has a monitor issue. When it is turned on, there is a strange warp filling the left 1/3 of the screen, which bends the image down and quivers slightly. As the machine warms up, it creeps towards the center of the screen and never gets better. Is this beyond a few pot turns? Would a cap kit fix it? I’m trying to find a reason to not buy it, but if this one is likely fixable, I may need to look for another reason. Cheers! Jeff

Response from Jonathan: Jeff,

Yeah, I’ve seen this before. Some people refer to this as a drooping issue. We recommend starting off this repair by trying the adjustments on the monitor itself. Make sure you adjust the horizontal hold in particular as it might help solve the issue. Check out our post on Adjusting An Arcade Monitor for more information.

If the droop continues after making your adjustments, a cap kit would be the next thing to try. Our post on Installing A Cap Kit has some great information if you’re not already familiar with the process.

Now, it’s possible that you could have a bad adjustment pot for horizontal hold (or another adjustment) but we definitely recommend trying the cap kit first before suspecting a bad pot.

Hope that helps. Thank you for your question and good luck with your repair.
