Pac man Cocktail table
Question from Mark: Hello, love your site, great info! Someone just gave me a Pac man cocktail table game from 1981. They said it worked but when I plugged it in all that I get on the screen is the image I attached to this email. I also attached the video of what it’s doing too. The game does make sounds, but its a series of beeps and sounds almost like its running through a test of some sort, and none of them seem to sound like any Pac Man sounds. Any info would be greatly appreciated. Thank you. Mark

Response from Jonathan: Mark,
Looks like you’re having lots of issues. Just from your video, I would guess there are some board and monitor (sync and hold) problems with your cocktail cabinet. First thing we recommend doing is checking the power supply to make sure that the board is getting the proper voltage. Check out our post on Checking A Classic Power Supply for information on this process. Sometimes the AC transformer in games like Pac Man will get a power surge which will cause a voltage spike and burn part of the edge connector on the board where the harness plugs in. If this is the case, you might have to do some repair to the board to make sure that the voltage is getting to the board. It might be a good idea to install a switching power supply in the cabinet just to prevent something like this from happening in the future. Arcade Shop sells plug and play kits to install switching power supplies in Pac Man cabinets without having to rewire them if you’re interested.
Once you know that the power getting to the board is good, you might start working on your Pac Man board. There is a great page called the Lawnmowerman’s Pac-man Website which gives some information on working on Pac Man boards. Your monitor looks like it might be having some sync and hold issues. Hold issues are usually pretty easy to resolve just by turning the horizontal and vertical hold pots on the monitor chassis. See our post on Adjusting An Arcade Monitor for more information. Sync issues are usually a bit harder to track down. You might try to adjust your B+ voltage to see if it helps at all with the sync. If it doesn’t, try following the sync wire from the harness to the monitor chassis to make sure it’s connected properly. Please let us know if you continue to have problems after trying all of these steps and we’ll try to recommend some other items to check.
Hope that helps. Thank you for your question and good luck with your repair.
